I always wonder how they make pictures like this, as lightning is a bolt of electricity so it's only there for a few ms...
Do you use a really slow shutter speed?

a slow shutter speed should not work except if there would be really a lot of lightning(which should end in an interesting picture with lots of lightning bolts striking at once), a fast shutter speed with ~4 pictures per second should do the trick and of course you'd need a nice piece of glass (big aperture/iris) or (no offence intended against your camera :P) the noise in the image is all crushhsdhsdhs
Or have these 2000€ cameras that have an awesome high iso performance...
My idea: Short(time) lightning (want to "catch" the lightning = fast shutter), low light... nice aperture (mby f2-f3, any thing lower than f2 might just be too much) and the 4 pictures per second is just to make it easier to get a good picture :D

But correct me Pingo and manhut :) just thinking out loud I'm not a student ^^

The thing is the incredible high brightness of the lightning. It's so much brighter than anything else (especially at night), that even a very short lightning bolt is enough to be recorded at the sensor in the camera, no matter how long the shutter speed is. Take this shot as an example:
Image
(Taken from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:High ... e_Busy.jpg)
It was shot with long exposure (Exposure time 8 sec, F-number f/11, ISO speed rating 250). The lights of the cars are so bright (compared to the enviroment), that every one of them is clearly visible although they are driving by relatively fast...

Back to topic: Nice pictures, Pingo! Must have been exciting to take these pictures... This summer we also had a lot of thunder and lightning in eastern germany so far. Unfortunately I'm not living above the rooftops :)

That's true. As I have no 2000€ camera and I'm not that fast to spot/turn/shoot, I used a veeerrrryyyy sophisticated way of taking thunderbolt pics --> just turn on camera in video mode and then extract frames with kino  :P ...you could notice that by chronologically sorted first 3 pics in second post :D
