Duh, yeah you didn't clash, this was just little argumentation :D i know..

Well oki doki.. if u want to be so minimalistic why to use thumbnails, you don't know what's the map about just from thumbnail, only difference is if you played the map but don't know it's name, then again you have to browse all the maps looking at thumbnails which is quite inefficient. So what is the purpose?

well ye, thumbs are ok only for the people who know the maps - cant avoid that. if you feel like contributing, you can take lets say 10 screenshots of every map (nothing too hard, just about 2330 images :P), so we can attach them to the maps for people who havent played them.

the purpose is to have something for those maps rather than nothing.

What do you want? Videos? :-)

While you only exactly know what a map is about when you played
it, there are various pieces of information helping you to decide if
a map might be interesting for you or not. The "opening levelshot"
or whatever it's called and various screenshots are some of these
pieces.

And of course, the thumbnails are of (hopefully) reasonable, or
even better: user selectable size so that people quickly get the
amount of information they want at a first glance.

Btw.: Maybe videos would be a useful addition, either as animated
GIFs (but this is probably too low-color) or as real videos, but
no-one managed yet to automate their creation, so that this still
is a tedious process.

Point:
1.) You won't know map until you play it few times on server no matter what else you do.
2.) What about using names of maps instead of thumbnails?

:) Sry for the previous misunderstandings.

As for one long page and browser's search: I often use browser's built-in search function for fast navigation. I.e. in such a page I'd just press CTRL+F and type "4_sw" and voila, I'm looking at ut4_swim. Much faster than mouse-scrolling through 200 maps first or trying to guess if ut4_swim is on page 20 or page 24.

As for thumbnails, most people's brains process images faster than text, so when you are scrolling for a map that you know (and you just want to check some metadata on it) a thumbnail is a good way to get your attention to the right place.

Does anyone know why icons were introduced to GUIs? Somehow I am sure it was for no reason other than increasing CPU load. :)

Alas, this $"_!§$ board doesn't show posting time stamps, so I don't know If you posted this without having read post33422.html#p33422 first. If you didn't read it, then read it and come back again if there are still questions. If you did read it, I don't understand item 1) in your list. :-)

eXtr33m wrote:Point:

Yes, I agreed already on that, but it's no valid argument to make
the thumbnails irrelevant:

You can, for instance, see if the map is a Quake style map, and
immediately skip or play it, depending on your preferences.

Of course, the name of the map is also there, see

http://dswp.de/old/wiki/doku.php/maps

(check map "ut4_justanexample")
