Radeon HD 2400 FPS issue.

Postby Rayne » 08.24.10

Today i finally managed to get my hands on what i believed is a better graphics card compared to my old one.
I switched from radeon 9600XT 128mb to a radeon HD 2400 pro 256 MB. When i tried playing skeet shooting today my FPS was around 30-35, while with 9600XT it was on constant 70 FPS.
Also when i start the game, it looks like I'm running it in 256 colors. I tried changing settings in game and catalyst but nothing helped.
I'm using a 2,8 Ghz single core processor and 1GB of ram, drivers are all updated to a latest version.
I'm aware of the fact that HD 2400 isn't exactly a gaming card, but the core and memory speed are almost the same (i think even slightly higher) then in 9600XT. So i expected at least same results, but not worse.

If someone has or had at some point had this graphics card please post your experience with it, thanks.

As far as I know the memory bandwidth on the HD2400 is cut on half compared to the 9600XT... that's the problem...

9600XT has a 9GB bandwith and HD 2400 6 GB. I don't know if a 30% less bandwith is enough to cause such high FPS drop, fuck me if i know, all i know is that i wasted my money and have to put the 9600XT back in.

I believe that in some situations the HD2400 could be faster or tie against the 9600XT if you run a aplication that uses some shaders programs because the graphics processor of the 2400 has some improvements in that area.

For example the improved version of UrT 4.1 use some shaders programs. But it will still run like ass on the HD2400, that's for sure...

Btw the 9600XT when was launched was a medium end card... the HD2400 was launched as a low end card. Usually the graphics cards makers, implement a narrow 64bit memory bus on low end cards, which is really bad especially for older games...

You can always overclock the memory of the graphics card a bit, and if you see some nice improvements, that's the answer for the problem...

And yes you should search for another card if you want...

Such performance loss shouldn't happen, despite it's not the best graphic card.
Do you have 32 or 64 bits version of UrT ? What binary do you use ?
You say it looks like 256 colors, any screenshot ?
What is the value of r_lastValidRenderer variable in your .cfg ?

Psssssst, it's funny like this.

@topic: Try waiting for the next version of drivers, I noticed that most performance drops on ATI cards are due to bad drivers. Some ATI drivers (on Windows) also interfere with other devices (first-hand experience).

DRIVERS!!!! ATI's sux, at least as much i experienced.

It may be ATI cards can have more RAM or anything, but theirs preformance will still be worse.
