exaile is a music player that started as an attempt to port amarok to gtk, I think they decided to go their own way a little but from what I remember it was their original goal to recreate amarok (or at lest it's functionality) using gtk.

I'm using exaile too since qt3 is deprecated on gentoo and amarok still had no qt4 version available, don't know if that changed by now.

How do you use Amarok? I never managed to play a file in it. It's interface was just too confusing to me.

I usually use VideoLan Client (VLC) for playing music because it doesn't insist on having a media library. A simple (what I like) playlist does the job for me. However, VLC breaks at random for me and reinstall+rm -r .vlc doesn't fix it. Then it starts working again at random.
