SanHolo wrote: You can try, but to create a proton exchange membrane you'll most likely need ionomers (see e.g. here: http://www.pslc.ws/mactest/ionomer.htm), and you need quite some dedicated stuff to develop and manufacture these. natirips wrote: For the membrane, shouldn't something as simple as stainless steel do? That would be no membrane, but a barrier. And the battery would discharge immediately; steel is a conductive material, the ions would just go through. ;) You can make tiny holes in it, and make it two-layered, and insert a layer of i.e. rubber between if you need insulation. I'm just theorytising (or whatever the word for making a theory would be :S).

I was only thinking of something durable that would not corrode...

glass? wont work either from my POV. and by the way it is not... solid. glass is a flowing liquid. although a very very slowly flowing one, but it is not solid. so in case it would work, you would most certaily need an extremely thin layer, which would not be stable enough, even with force applied to it at all. and it does not matter which glass type you use, they all have the above mentioned characteristic in common. sadly my memory gives me the finger on further information on the subject. (in university i had to learn a lot about glass, too.)
or like some kind of these clear/lookproof/whatever-look-they-have plastics. forgot as well already what i learned one year ago in chemistry about all these artificial materials and so on.^^
all plastics (at least the durable ones IIRC) can only be produced by refining, cracking and recombining... oil. and all cant stand UV-light. could, in theory, there also be a problem with a steady stream of energy through it? like it wears down or something? (well, in case it could work at all^^)
insulation would work with it, but energy must be able to flow (wursti said, didn't he?). so that means some special kind of semi-permeable membrane is needed, isn't it?
---> no glass or metal in this case. and no drilling or laser-burning holes into it either.
