I would imagine it being somewhat not so difficult in 4.1 or plain old Q3 for that matter. Just trigger an up/down moving door to move into the map when you want to show the path (i.e. when a player steps somewhere), and make the door (path) out of brushes with "surfaceparm nonsolid" in the appropriate place in .shader file.
