I actually have the same dark problem on windowze with nvidia, (before it was with ati on linux).. though on linux i simply used this some bash script (natirips has one too)
something like
Code:
#!/bin/bash
xgamma -gamma 2.0
./path/to/binary
xgamma -gamma 1.0

Can't check if its correct, I still didn't install an y Linux on this machine (terrible stuff i know :D ). But this works that it simply changes gamma for your gaming session, but of course if you alt tab you will get white hell.

thanks for the script but after a little bit help from chron and the internet I found out that there is no fix to the fence problem... which makes (for my hardware atleast) urban terror pretty much unplayable on linux, i will have to get windows running on that machine :/

I think it's more about software than hardware.

ATI/AMD make some awesome hardware, but I don't buy their graphics cards because they seem to be unable to make drivers (properly).

I remember owning a Radeon 9200 and I had to disable particles in all games or else I'd get slideshow. Years later I updated the drivers and all of a sudden particles worked smoothly.

So the hardware was capable of doing them properly all the time, only the drivers sucked.

Full ACK. ATI Linux drivers have a long tradition of
sucking universes through nanotubes.

Get yourself a used Nvidia card on eBay, install
proprietery Nvidia drivers (package "nvidia-glx")
and everything should work.

You could also try the free ATI drivers, maybe
they're good enough by now. The free Nvidia drivers
are getting to a point where I'm thinking of using
them instead of Nvidia's blob.

Actually, at the time I was a Windows user and was completely unaware of anything other then M$ a.k.a. PC a.k.a. customizable computer and Apple a.k.a. Mac a.k.a. non-customizable (and more expensive) computer.

So they suck under Windows, too. Great.

With AMD/ATI graphicscards I only had good experiences on windows, just once with Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Versus Mode I had truble but as it turned out there was a fix to that with a program called 3danalyze.
