uncle: i hope you not suggesting he compiles all the stuff on that eee-pc hes talking about? :)

btw, damn small seems fucked up:

Quote:
Current status of the project

Due to infighting among the project's originators and main developers, DSL development seems to be at a standstill, and the future of the project is uncertain, much to the dismay of many of the users.[1] The web site for DSL is currently offline as of March 21st, 2012.

nati: usb is fast enough m8, without swap and eventually with a small partition on the disk for /home, /tmp and stuff. not a big drama, has been tested.

you people just made a huge philosophy for a simple question, thus making the experience of trying linux very ugly.

@zietsh: only you can choose what is best for you... just dont use gentoo...

What i meant is number or programs you get with fresh install and might want to use immediately. Repository size is almost indetical to those two distros.

Debian > Fedora

And cookie said: Choose whats right for me, so i like it stable and i like to play around here and there == Debian Mint (?).

EDIT:

Not Havoc, but biggest communitiy = most problems already spotted and solved (when you get problem, just google it and you'll find solution) :)

Im personaly very bound to microsoft products in my daily work (desktop in the meaning of gates).
So i shouldnt nag at all.
Its important to say that open source software always has a reason to exist. Ur needs must fit this reasons.
Before this is clear, its hard to say what might be profitable.

When using linux, im using it for servers. Debian.
Sure theres other but thats the work whores.
It was always the most clean (in the meaning of clean beer, too). Havoc said it.
In the last decade looots of people came using and supporting it.
IDK numbers. Comparing the 40K apps with a 500K apps Iphone wouldnt make sense.
However, professional and private users use and support it the same time.
Its what they always dreamt of: Peaceful coexistence of humans anc capitalists.

Pros aka capitalists:
Many of them folx were professionals that make business with it, its possible without any restriction.
They want:
1.) Take a monthly amount of money per mail account or virtual host etc. (continuous payment)
2.) Pay no money themselfes (would drive own price up.)
3.) No issues for 5 years (while customers pay)
2.) 10 Min copy+reboot after 5 years cause new Hardware (oh no)
Debian makes this come true. If ure a good salesman.

Desktop humans:
Debian had another point where it became pretty famous.
Some South African guy with money built a nice OS basing on debian. Ubuntu.
All is pre-secelcted and pretty colorful, more easy to use then win or mac from the first second.
He made it so Africa could have a useful system.
Like a comfortable sofa with a truck engine.
They were vey successful, dont ask me for how many millions installs.
Debian came from the datacenters to the living rooms.

When u take Ubuntu, u will have same directory structures on 90% of all linux servers.
It turned out to be useful for me, much better then suse or red hat.
I found it to be noob/grandma/children proof.
Easiest way to equip your grandpa with surfing+skype.
Easiest way to introduce ur children in datacenter technology.

I've taken a switch from OpenSuse to Kubuntu and I have no regrets about it.
The System is very easy to configure and also very stable over the first 3 months. ;)
In my opinion you didn't make a fault if you give Kubuntu a try, especially when you use Windows, because the KDE-Windowmanager looks similar to Windows.
