MS got a bit stressed over this - http://www.funstuffz.com/russian-state- ... -on-linux/ , since some countries moved to open source lately.

of course they didnt just give the code for free to FSB, it all happens with contracts and stuff. if you have enough money, you can get such contract too i guess :)

anyway if you follow the logic from this article, the u.s.' CIA should have the code too. for many years already, on top of that.

also, you can try linux, if you havent yet :)

I think I read somewhere that M$ is going to hand out the code to quite a few countries (including russia and china) so they can review the code, alter where needed and close security holes on their own.
Since yes Linux and BSD are transparent and a lot of countries like that too (they can check what is send over the internet when concerned about personal information just by digging the code)

Yup i read that there is a big possiblity of other countries wnating the code.. Still i dont know. It is better for goverments to use opensource or closed source? I dont like the idea of someone else then author of the closed source project having the source.. it decrease the power of closed source. Yep of course i am on linux :) but me too have to use sometimes Windows.. (and people around me too :X)

sure for the governments open source is better. closed source does not make it more secure or something, real life experiences show its more insecure actually. it does make it more expensive for sure tho, and in the end, its the tax payers' money. not to mention the corruption they generate. o yes, microsoft bribes.

with the closed source you are left at the mercy of a (foreign) company, known for its insecurity (and foul market behavior) more than its security, now thats already a huge security hole.

with the open source the exploits and other nasties - bugs etc, are spotted by many different people, so an exploit cant remain hidden for a long time.

closed source is to protect the profits. nothing more.

me?
they go find "bugs" that nobody else can fix or monitor.
such a bug might be here:
http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2 ... bg_ad.html

open source is at its best where are many people affected.
encryption affect allmost anyone these days.
the guys with the really worthy data use ipsec.
