as long as you use real accounts and mail folders it shouldn't be too tough to setup qmail or postfix together with courier imap or pop, virtual domains and mysql managed accounts can give you an headache ...

Essentially I am installing a mail server because I want to use it to send mail alerts generated by Nagios, which is a network monitoring program.

ah thats easy one then. ye postfix or sendmail will do the job.

p.s. you dont need the pop3/imap stuff if you want only to send mails too. actually you dont even need the postfix/sendmail running, you only need it installed to be able to send mail using shell/php/perl/whatever scripts.

btw mail server.
if u wanna use ur mailserver not only for system messages:
consider fighting spam with the greatest ever anti-spam tool.

its called assp (http://www.assp.sf.net)

its a smtp proxy, written in perl (huhu)
its not the most performant machine on the planet but the most versatile.
and through perl its platform independend, its getting placed between your mailserver and the evil i-net.
it can swallow a whole message for processing and still say "nobody @ home, im sry m8", thats the reason why its a proxy.
through its transparency the spammers will talk to the mailserver herself, it will just jump in for the case that somethings wrong.

ah and again:
if u dont have expirience with smtp:
start over with postfix, read bout smtp auth and control regularly for relay attacks.
dont become a zombie! read bout smtp auth! dont let messages beeing delivered that dont belong to the local domains list!

Thanks. As far as I remember I already have AUTH and TLS in the server, after reading some stuff about this. I will check the proxy by the way.

During this week my laptop died... (I was using it to test the server), so only for the next week I will check about this again.

seems mandriva is about to try a big jump and hopefully a takeover: http://www.tuxradar.com/content/mandriva-alive

i urge you all linux fans to download and try the new release (should be available in a week or so) as a sign of support of one of the best eu distros.
