Finally, I represent you the gnome-panel-less GNOME:

After a millenia of searching the web, pointless considerations of modifying the GNOME source, asking many people and what not, a lightbuld flashed above my head:

Code:
natirips@nati-lap:/razno/progr/laxni-gnome-panel$ ls
gnome-panel  gnome-panel.c
natirips@nati-lap:/razno/progr/laxni-gnome-panel$ cat gnome-panel.c
#include<unistd.h>
int main(){while(1)sleep(50000);return 0;}

natirips@nati-lap:/razno/progr/laxni-gnome-panel$ echo This shows how to hack GNOME and "remove" gnome-panel from your interface. I've done this since they didn't allow me to this normally, so I used this dirty hack :). I use lxpanel instead becasue it saves CPU, memory and screen space. It is so sleak that you can hardly even see it (it's in the middle of the bottom of my screen). I like the rest of GNOME though. I once tried gnome-shell, has some nice concepts but is a piece of s**t all in all.
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `)'
natirips@nati-lap:/razno/progr/laxni-gnome-panel$ echo Noooo, the error.
Noooo, the error.
natirips@nati-lap:/razno/progr/laxni-gnome-panel$  cc gnome-panel.c -o gnome-panel;sudo cp `which gnome-panel` `which gnome-panel`-therealone;sudo cp gnome-panel `which gnome-panel`

what is it you like about gnome that you go through all that hassle instead of just switching to a more lightweight wm/de?

For a start, the fact that touchpad's settings actually take effect (I haven't observed such a phenomenom on any other WM/DE so far including KDE and Xfce /! (I guess I have a very strange touhpad)). Also, I love eog's "set as desktop background" function, than there's a neat Appearance Preferences, compiz can run with it (this is practically an absolute must to me), it's not falling apart (KDE and Xfce never worked well for me), and I had no objections to it(GNOME) other than gnome-panel eating insane amount of memory and maybe the curable (by "killall nautilus;nautilus") nautilus issue when it doesn't free memory after it's not needed anymore.

ATM, my system takes less than 256MB of ram after bootup with compiz, ftp, ssh, etc. servers and all my background toys running.

gnome-panel started up with using very few ram for me, but after 12 hours it always was at 180mb :D

left ubuntu behind, needed a new system anyways :D
Now I realised how much I screwed up my previous installation :shock:
Microphone, UrT, speakers - work :)
Isn't a great difference, Mint is based on Ubuntu :)
