I use Linux Mint, an on since i'm on it, i really didn't have single problem till now... And i'm using 1 year old dist (had no reason to update). I have nvidia so that works great, but i remember spending days, both on ubuntu and debian to make everything work (mostly sound on ubuntu and video on debian), but on mint it really worked perfectly since i installed it.

ye, maybe consider nvidia.
for example 9500 gt passive cooled, its not sooo expensive. there should be even used ones, maybe ur cousin has windows (so he could safely use ur card...)

i mean: compared to the worth sitting for hours fighting with weired probs that shouldnt be there

hmm I think newer (maybe not the latest) ATI cards got some support by now, at least that shiny three screens on one card and lots of screens configurations are claimed to be supported (altho I do not know how they are handled in X, xinerama is a pain in the a**, separate X are just worse)

With nvidia you might have to look for older drivers for your card (9800GT was supported last time I used one, 8800GT too) and you better not aim for the latest high-end stuff (even my GTX 560 Ti isn't fully supported yet, only one screen is detected in Linux, worked flawless with [8|9]800 GT (9800 GX2 had it's own problems (detected two chips, only one chip per display = no twinview, but dualgpu on one screen worked fine (did you know that I love brackets?))))

Suse had, and still was when I last checked, fighting for the idea of one central configuration utility, I tried using it myself, friends even made the mistake of throwing suse on a dedicated server, the only problem is that there is (was) no clean way to work around their shiny yast in order to really configure your system, and the options in yast sometimes are (were) quite handicapped. Plus once you spent a few years in terminal you don't want graphical configuration, but don't be scared of me just yet xD

Anyways that is mostly ranting, make sure you are using the binary drivers from your vendor (fglrx for ati I think) since they outshine the open drivers by far when it comes to 3D rendering (in all modes and with all libraries)
