There is reason why people leave Ubuntu: It's experimental "sold" as stabile... If you have any idea whyt linux is, i'd really recommend you to switch distro (it's really not hard, if you stick to gnome (or whatever you have) you can keep most of config and all data). Debian or Mint is what i'd suggest, but there are many more distros that work better than Ubuntu.

It's sad for Ubuntu, since i started with it as well (8.04), worked almost flawlessly, but i noticed that with every new version instead of upgrades i got downgrades, and instead of fixing bugs they got tons of new ones...

I started off with 6.10. I never had to complain until I had to install 12.04 (I only install the LTS versions). This must be the first time I see some degression in the development of Ubuntu.

Apparently, the mouse bug is due to xorg1.11. That bug is supposed to be fixed on 1.12 but the latest version in the official repos is 1.11.4, which has been set up a few days ago. Looks like UrT players will have to suffer a little more if they use Ubuntu 12.04...

I am indeed seriously considering switching to Debian or Slackware (still hesitating). More likely to be Debian since it is closer to Ubuntu and I always have trouble when changing environments.

Then go debian, once you put it it can stay for like, well, forever.

Whatever you do with Debian, DO NOT MIX REPOSITORIES OF DIFFERENT VERSIONS!

It may sometimes sound like a good idea to pull just one or two packages from another version, but it's just about the stupidest thing you can possibly do with Debian.

(I had this bad experience when I only wanted to use Mumble from (then experimental, now stable) squeeze on my otherwise (then stable, now oldstable) lenny. It ended up with breaking almost everything repository-related.)

True !
IIRC I had to compile mumble when it wasn't included yet in the repo. You could also find a static version...
Debian ftw again :)

I've done this since years with no real troubles.

You just need your pinning in /etc/apt/preferences, and then
everything should be fine.

And in case you urgently need a package which pulls in too
many (important, like libc) unstable/experimental dependencies,
you can still install a downloaded static version in /opt or
/usr/local.

Wow, what a desastrous result with only one package. :-/

You do know that you can tell aptitude to either pull in deps
from your default repo:
Code: Select all
aptitude <somepackage>/experimental
(which is the preferred way, as it's more unlikely to break things)
as well as tell it to pull them in from another flavor:
Code: Select all
aptitude -t experimental <somepackage>
right?
