There’s also an unofficial torrent for those who can’t download the game otherwise — but since the updater is kinda rickety, there are several sets of slightly broken files out there, the one from the torrent among them. I downloaded the game via the updater and started seeding the torrent — but some ancillary files (How_To_Install.rtf, readme42.txt etc) turned out to be different from the ones I had. The key to this mystery was someone pointing out the ridiculousness of having HTML code in the included Quake3-UrT_Logitech_Game_Recognition.reg (Windows registry entry) — turns out the updater has been merrily accepting “Not found” pages as valid downloads. (All PK3s and such are fine.)

A notable bug: Barbatos confirmed that sliding drains stamina way too fast and this is not intended.

The animations are definitely not the same as in HD alpha, but yes, the idea behind them is exactly the same in both versions — more variation, more feedback (and, unintentionally, more bugs.) Someone on #urbanterror said that if you kill a crouching player, they’ll instantly keel over, then stand up and go through the full standing death animation again… oh dear:-D

Among other minor problems (like armbands always showing black), 4.2 currently has no funstuff. The (un)official pre-launch radio show got H0i talk about the upcoming release and answer questions, and he explained they had to rip out some existing code that interefered the new animations. Specifically, he mentioned that in 4.1(.1), player models and related items were scaled in software; with this code gone, every model already has to have correct dimensions in file, and due to this, most funstuff is of wrong size.

Well, I would recommend you to wait for further updates, 4.2 as it is right now is less good than 4.1.

RaideR said the occasional broken files are caused by the updater doing no MD5 checking whatsoever. Good to know:-P

BTW, I’ve tried to find some arguments against the autoupdater, and mostly failed. Although the centralized approach they use is bound to cause grief beyond simple “downloads taking forever” and will give them one more thing to be adamantly anal about (“no mirrors, period”), there are only a few possible approaches to rolling out incremental fixes instead of full versions spaced far apart, all of them employing some kind of smart agent. I used to think most computer users capable of installing and playing an FPS are savvy enough, until I actually tried to help some of them on #urbanterror. *shudder* Even the 4.1.1 update/full installer has been confusing many players, let alone HD alpha; can you imagine one of these “can’t find the Any key” kind of people starting up the game, getting version mismatch error on connecting to a server, and then — assuming they’d know where to go for updates — being presented with three or four patches that all need to be downloaded, and applied in the right order…

And please don’t give me any crap about getting rid of stupid players being a good thing — our very own BeH is about the dumbest guy I’ve ever seen, knowing jack shit about even some of the basic features of UrT, and still playing it better than I ever could, not to mention having this sweet personality <3.

I still don't get it, how can you announce something 3 years before beta (very buggy one) comes out (without you being Blizzard). I think even Skyrim wasn't announced that early....
