I know knoppix was burning CRTs (by forcing some insane refresh rates) long before Ubuntu did that.

however, they are both debian forks.

Hey, just wanted to say I've now got Linux Mint Lisa, cause somehow Linux Mint Debian did not work on the USB-Drive... tried to solve that but without success.
I'm quite happy with it did not run into any problems yet...

Which reminds me: as far as Linux is concerned there isn't much of a difference between USB Flash drive, USB HDD or internal HDD.

The only problem with USB drives and different computers is that different computers can make the same USB drive /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd, etc.; and GRUB doesn't like that. That's why you'll maybe need another boot loader. Look here for a hint or two http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_boot_loaders .
P.S.: Something from the SYSLINUX collection is what you probably want.

mm...
grub is configured by default to use uids instead since some years ago, just for that reason.

I still find GRUB to be unreliable for booting from USB stick.

What I meant was that anything Linux- (the kernel) -based runs "equally" on almost any storage device, regardless of particular distro.
