That about voice activity detection being hacked probably means it won't be able to tell the difference between real voice activity and coughing or breathing. I wouldn't be concerned much about that.

As google search shows i've actually met with that VAD message in games like Savage.. Idk.
ALSA should work absolutely fine. If u want to test it just run Web Browser with flash some song, then open some media player and play another song there.
Btw I don't get it what actually happen? in your log you posted you killed mumble with Ctrl+C but what actually happens when you run mumble then UrT?

In which case don't bother with switching to OSS, since ALSA works properly in your version of Ubuntu.
