ATI/AMD make some awesome hardware, but I don't buy their graphics cards because they seem to be unable to make drivers (properly).
I remember owning a Radeon 9200 and I had to disable particles in all games or else I'd get slideshow. Years later I updated the drivers and all of a sudden particles worked smoothly.
So the hardware was capable of doing them properly all the time, only the drivers sucked.
Full ACK. ATI Linux drivers have a long tradition of
sucking universes through nanotubes.
Get yourself a used Nvidia card on eBay, install
proprietery Nvidia drivers (package "nvidia-glx")
and everything should work.
You could also try the free ATI drivers, maybe
they're good enough by now. The free Nvidia drivers
are getting to a point where I'm thinking of using
them instead of Nvidia's blob.
