However, I still haven't seen an LCD with such quality of color reproduction as an average CRT had.

LCDs have a whole lot of disadvantages compared to CRTs (and advantages
also). I don't know how bad the color issues are with a modern
non-TN panels, but as all at least vaguely UrbanTerror-compatible LCDs
(120 Hz) use a TN panel, you might want to buy two separate LCDs if you plan on
buying LCDs at all, one for gaming, and one for working.

As currently there is no good CRT on eBay and the likes, I'm going to
get a used 120 Hz LCD and see if its quality (especially regarding
hold-type-inherent motion-blur) is good enough. They're still doing it
wrong, but maybe it's good enough for me. I'll try to lower my already
low expectations even more -- this way I might be able to catch a
glimpse of the LCDs picture before it's covered in barf or has an axe
in it.

Lol, there is no CRTs to buy here in any shop, and you can hardly see any used ones being for sale.

What I dislike about my laptop's LCD is that I can't see the whole palette of colors at the same time and that I see different portions of palette on different portions of the screen. This is especially problematic when I do graphics (drawing and retouching). I never know what the picture is gonna look like on another screen.
:x

But if your CRTs are dieing, check voltage (if you have a multimeter or a voltmeter) and make sure you're not using to high refresh rate for a specific resolution. Sometimes the software lets you destroy your monitor, and sometimes it doesn't let you utilize it's full potential, and sometimes it doesn't let you use it the non-destructive way. I know that Knoppix practically destroyed one of my CRTs because it wouldn't let me reduce refresh rate below 85Hz and wouldn't let me reduce resolution below maximal supported by the monitor. I turned it off when it begun smelling.

Yeah, true since 2005 or so.

Not true, at least in Germany, there are many used CRTs on sale -- but
only few that let me play with 125 fps on at least 1280x960.

Hm, then your laptop is either cheap or old. I'm not à jours wrt to
current panel quality, but there should be laptops with decent panels
out there.

It's fine -- at least when measured momentarily. Who knows which spikes
my CRTs get here and there. A small online-UPS could help in that case.

Did so. Couldn't use maximum of 1392x1044@125 Hz, as the picture had
distortions then (at least with the generated modelines), and I didn't
want to put too much effort in it, so I just went with 1280x960@125 fps.

Ouch. :-/ You could always make your own timings, but depending on the
available software, it could involve (unnecessarily) tedious work.
