Yep, Ubuntu (and most of it's derivatives) is a good start, and to many users it's all they'll ever need.
But of course, for some exotic purposes it completely contra-productive (i.e. on a mobile phone or a microwave oven).
Don't worry, Knight, Kubuntu is a decent distro (among the best out there). It's main quality (same as with Ubuntu and Debian) is that most of the stuff
just works. Once you begin to understand it you'll be wondering "why oh why didn't I discover it before", or at the very least I did so.
My first distro was Red Hat (many years ago), and then for a long time I was on Windows (not that it was my idea), and the moment I discovered Kubuntu, I was reborn. I later tried many distros (Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Nexenta, Debian, Gentoo, DSL, SliTaz, ...) and even some non-Linux systems (like Open Solaris, FreeDOS or Syllable). Of course, unless you share my high interest about informatics you will most likely not pursue the same path, but you might become aware of reality much better than an average Window$ user.
When a typical Window$ user sees my desktop over my shoulder, they ask me "what Windows version is that?". They are unaware that anything other than Window$ exists in this world. Some know about Mac, a few know about ancient Unix or DOS. Rare know about Win 3.x.
However, an average GNU/Linux user (an average computer user that uses anything other than Winblows) knows well that GNU/Linux (or whatever they use) is not the only OS out there. They know that they are not alone.
